Test your garage door safety regularly

It is a good idea to test your residential overhead garage door every month to ensure that it functions properly. Here is how you can test your garage door. Open your garage door and place a piece of 2x4 lumber on the floor (flat side down) underneath the garage door. Then, push the button for the garage door opener to close the door. You know that your door is working properly if the door goes back up automatically when it touches the lumber that is lying on the floor. This obstacle, about one-and-a-half inch tall, should be enough to bring the door back up.
If the door for some reason stays down and does not reverse upon touching the piece of wood then we suggest that you turn off the opener and operate the door manually until you can get a qualified Garage Door Service Technician to come and adjust your door.
